When it comes to the best bars for martinis in London, you’re completely spoiled for choice. There are so many places I can order up my favorite classic and they’ll do it just right. But this trio of venues is my round up of “musts” for serious martinis fans.
Dukes Bar: Freezer martinis and 007 undertones
How can Dukes not earn a spot on a list of the best bars for martinis in London when it is purportedly the location where Ian Fleming, author of the 007 series and habitué back in the day, coined the phrase “shaken, not stirred.”? Dukes Bar is a legendary hotel with a storied history dating back to 1908. The bar is celebrated for its “freezer martinis” served straight from the ice box to maintain optimal temperature and purity. Dukes bar’s hallmark is its table-side service, where expert bartenders prepare your martini on a trolley, ensuring an impeccably proper experience.
Tip: Savor the experience, as – given the potency of their martinis – Dukes enforces a two-drink limit per guest.
Beaufort Bar at The Savoy: Caviar bumps and nocturnal glamour
While the American bar at the historic Savoy hotel is a worthy choice, I’m partial to the Beaufort for one of the best bars for martinis in London. With its dramatic gold and black decor, the vibe is nocturnally seductive. Comfy love seats around the walls are the perfect spots for confidential tete-a-tetes. With its rich ambience and meticulous attention to detail, Beaufort is currently one of my favorite bars for their signature martini (or champagne flute) with an indulgent caviar bump. Dress code is “Dress to Impress” so suit up in something understatedly but glamorously chic.
Tip: Most of the bar is walk-in only, but a limited number of reservations can be made for up to 2 people, so plan ahead.
Connaught Bar: The height of cocktail expertise and service, table side
The Connaught Bar, in the distinguished hotel of the same name, is a testament to sophistication and style. While the stunning David Collins decor inspired by 1920’s English and Irish Cubist art is enough to draw in the clientele, it’s the talent behind the bar that really seals the deal. Agostino Perrone, Giorgio Bargiani and the rest of the hard-working team have earned the Connaught Bar a place at No. 5 on the 2023 World’s 50 Best Bars list. When it comes to this classic cocktail, the bar is well-known for its trolley service, and expert staff who craft your martini tableside with a special selection of bitters to tailor your drink to your taste. This bespoke approach is not only delightful to watch but also ensures that every martini is uniquely suited to each drinker’s palate. The level of service, lovely surroundings, and standout commitment to quality ingredients and preparation makes the Connaught Bar an ultimate destination for a classic martini in the heart of London.
Tip: If you can’t make it to London, the Connaught Bar recently released a cocktail book so you can enjoy their celebrated creations at home.
